How Melissa McCarthy Lost Weight

Common Challenges of Losing Weight

People often feel frustrated when they try to lose weight, especially if they've tried in the past with little success. Fortunately, some useful guidelines can help make the process less difficult.
Many people can't resist their favorite sweet treats or greasy fast food items because they're addicted to sugar and fat. One of the key benefits of a high protein diet is that it curbs appetite so you don't want as much junk food or sweets. Protein also helps prevent hunger-induced overeating at night because it suppresses ghrelin, your hunger hormone.

If you struggle with low energy levels or feel sluggish after a meal, low-carb diets may be your answer. After stopping her insulin shots, Jan says she had more energy and she was able to exercise more regularly.

It's never too late to change how you eat and how you live. Actress Melissa McCarthy reportedly lost 40 pounds by making smarter choices about what she eats and changing her lifestyle habits (e.g., getting more sleep). She had her thyroid checked out, but doctors told her she didn't need medication for it.

She changed up her workouts, doing more cardio and fewer weights, which made them easier to fit into an already-busy schedule. I'm not losing any muscle mass, she says. I'm just burning fat.

What Did She Do About These Challenges?

Melissa McCarthy is an American Actress who is best known for her role as Susan in the television series Mike & Molly. She was also seen in Bridesmaids, an award-winning comedy film directed by Paul Feig. The movie features Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy.

Melissa has faced numerous challenges in her life such as diabetes and thyroid disease. These challenges have been a factor in her struggle with weight gain. She used to weigh 265 pounds but she now weighs 140 pounds. Here are some of the things that she did to lose weight:

  • She ate oatmeal with soy milk and blueberries every morning for breakfast.
  • She drank water all day long (which helps people lose weight).
  • She would not drink any soda or juice.
  • She stopped eating rice because it's so heavy on her stomach.
  • She stopped eating bread (wheat) because it's too heavy on her stomach, making her want to eat more food than she should be eating.
  • For lunch, she ate salads with chicken breast and had fruit for dessert.
  • For dinner, she stuck to lean meats like steak or salmon and fresh vegetables like broccoli.
One day per week she would allow herself some comfort foods like chocolate cake, ice cream, or pizza. To combat her sugar cravings, she drank sparkling water with a slice of lemon in it.

Quit Drinking

We know that one of the quickest ways to shed some pounds is by quitting booze. Now, this will inevitably mean cutting out a lot of fun stuff in life. However, if you can learn to enjoy life without alcohol, it's not going to feel like a huge change for too long. It'll just feel like getting healthier day by day.

If you're worried about missing those cool backyard BBQs because you have decided to stop drinking, then show up with some beer koozies stuffed full of refreshing fruit juice, or maybe even offer alcoholic options like virgin cocktails or sodas with mixers so your friends don't get grumpy with you when they're having their after-work drinks.

Cut Down on Junk Food

Healthy eating has long been a major trend in Hollywood. Nutritionists, wellness experts, and food producers are all looking for ways to promote healthy living. However, actors are often the target of criticism because they often end up overfeeding their bodies during hibernation periods after finishing projects that typically involve weight gain.

This is what happened to actress Melissa McCarthy last year when she had a major upset with her weight after finishing two back-to-back movie roles. After starring in The Boss and Ghostbusters, she ended up gaining 20 pounds. But luckily for her, being an overweight woman has its advantages as it makes weight loss easier than it would be if you were skinny.

She did not go on some crazy diet plan but rather ate less junk food like cookies and donuts and replaced them with salad instead. She also cut down on sugar intake by switching from coffee to green tea and added more vegetables into her diet which helps curb cravings for sugar sweets. I've never been much of a sweets person, so I didn't notice any difference, said McCarthy. It was just getting enough protein.

Cut Down on Red Meat

Melissa McCarthy recommends cutting down on red meat to lose weight. I cut out red beef from my diet a few years ago and I lost thirty pounds in about two months. It sounds like an extreme change, but it's not that hard to give up something that has a relatively high caloric value for something that has almost none at all.

If you do decide to do this yourself, go for lean meats such as fish or chicken breast instead of ground beef. That way, you'll still get protein without adding the saturated fat from red meat.

Exercise more! (Her Workout Routine)

Early this morning, Melissa was spotted arriving at the workout studio to film a workout scene for her show Life of the Party. She opted for black Lululemon leggings with bright pink sneakers and a black Life of the Party hat.

  1. She began with some jogging on the treadmill, followed by alternating sets of barbell lunges, push-ups, sit-ups, and core work on a stability ball.
  2. Use suspension straps, two 45lb weights for tricep dips, and shoulder work with dumbbells before going back to more treadmill running. For 10 minutes she went through various cardio moves including jumping rope and skipping. And then it was time for abs: starting with crunches, twisting in a crunch position while raising her legs into the air, or bringing them together as she laid flat on her back.
  3. When it came to balancing training, she did one leg squats, walked on a Bosu Ball with an oblique twist over a set of hurdles, doing squats with side leg lifts for three reps per side.
  4. Next up were mountain climbers where she had her hands positioned in front of her body to really engage those abdominal muscles and work those shoulders as well.
  5. To finish up that part of the routine she did bicycle kicks so that you could feel those glutes activate.
There were other exercises mentioned but they can't be shown because they are graphic.

Eat fruits and vegetables...lots of them

First off, drink lots of water to make sure you are staying hydrated. And, try to focus on leafy greens (spinach, kale, etc.), because not only are they incredibly nutrient-rich, but they are low in calories. By the same token, fruit is a good way to satisfy your sweet tooth without derailing your diet; fruit is much lower in calories than other options like ice cream or cake.

There are also ways to go about making fruits even more healthy for you by adding certain toppings like a sliver of lime or orange peel, this will also make them taste more unique as well. Stay away from processed food, unless it's a specific meal replacement shake that is designed to help with weight loss.

Avoid red meat if possible, opting instead for white meats such as chicken breast and turkey sausage. Low-fat dairy products are still important to consume at every meal, so opt for nonfat versions when available.

It's best to avoid any high sugar content foods too, especially beverages. That means opting for drinks such as coffee or tea over juice or soda pop at all times.

Keep it simple, don't overwhelm yourself with too many ideas

Melissa McCarthy has been quite open about her weight fluctuations over the years. Recently, she's been on a very successful weight loss campaign and she credits part of it to a program called Dukan Diet.

The Dukan Diet is focused on foods that are high in protein and low in carbs, which sounds a lot like a high-fat diet. The plan also states that your goal should be to lose one pound per week. Melissa admits that being able to exercise while on the plane makes the experience easier; she starts by walking and then takes it up a notch by running/jogging once she's already lost some weight.

Melissa also believes that patience is key; because if you can't do this for life, then why bother doing it at all? You need to find what works for you, not what someone else thinks will work. She recommends finding a workout routine that you enjoy so that even when things get tough, you'll keep coming back for more.

Melissa says it's important to have faith in yourself because even though she couldn't find an easy way out through these challenges with food, she found motivation from other sources such as books (she loves The Spark), movies (she watched The Greatest Showman with her family), music (the song Don't Give Up by Peter Gabriel) and art (her daughter Maisey draws beautifully). In the end, it wasn’t easy, but it was worth it!

Set realistic goals...and then go beat them!

Melissa McCarthy has seen an increase in her profile as an actress, producer, fashion designer, author, and spokesperson. These endeavors have given her a worldwide platform to share her message of living a full life by rejecting self-imposed limitations, the importance of humor in the face of adversity, and how introspection can lead to genuine contentment. She recently returned to the big screen alongside Sandra Bullock in the highly successful The Heat.

In celebration of this achievement, and with a desire to maintain it, the acclaimed star underwent a radical body transformation for the film that eventually served as an impetus for embarking on one for real life. I was looking at my clothes going, ‘Oh man, I used to wear these things and now they don’t fit me anymore, she says. So I thought maybe if I lost some weight it would help my self-esteem. And she did, dropping from a size 16/18 down to a size 12/14 (that's 240 pounds down to about 180). To achieve this result, she had what we call The Big O.

Melissa McCarthy Weight Loss Tips

It's no secret that Melissa McCarthy struggled with her weight in the past. She was overweight as a child, at one point weighing 200 pounds. However, she managed to lose over 100 pounds (with lots of emotional struggles) through rigorous dieting and exercise.

Nowadays, she sticks to mostly organic vegetables for lunch or dinner and keeps her sugar intake low throughout the day so that she can indulge in chocolate occasionally. The natural sugars from fruit make her feel better after a healthy meal rather than eating brownies or cookies. If she is craving a carb-heavy treat, like pasta or bread, she will have just one serving instead of going overboard on carbs like many people do when they indulge their cravings. When you deprive yourself of your favorite foods all the time, you start to miss them more and more, which makes it harder to stick to your diet in the long run.

What is really impressive about Melissa McCarthy's weight loss journey is that she also works out two hours per day! Some days are easy but others are hard because sometimes it feels too daunting. However, by pushing herself physically each day, she has been able to keep up with her high-calorie burn. When she does find herself feeling sluggish, then she takes a walk around the block to pick up her energy levels again.

Her biggest tip for anyone looking to lose weight is not skipping meals or denying yourself food altogether. When you deprive yourself of your favorite foods all the time, you start to miss them more and more, which makes it harder to stick to your diet in the long run.

Another tip would be buying an inexpensive pedometer like this Omron HJ-720ITC pedometer since exercising every day burns tons of calories!
