Being in a situation where you feel your life is in danger can cause the body to release chemicals that induce the feeling of anxiety.

Feelings of anxiety and stress can also be triggered by a person's emotional state. If a person is dealing with past trauma or current emotional issues he may experience feelings of anxiety and stress.

As result anxiety and stress disorders are the most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses in the United States.

Anxiety and stress are characterized by feelings of uneasiness or apprehension about one or more life events or situations. The feelings range from occasional worrying to chronic feelings of distress that can be debilitating.

Causes of Anxiety and Stress:

Anxiety and stress disorders are one of the most common conditions in people, and the main cause behind them is not clear, as it is in most psychological disorders that occur in humans, researchers believe that natural chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters play a major role in the occurrence of anxiety and stress disorders, and it can be assumed that anxiety and stress disorder is caused by biological processes that occur in the body, genetic factors, and surrounding environmental factors. 

Some studies indicate that the incidence of anxiety and tension is higher in women compared to the proportion of men who suffer from the same disorder, and certain factors that can cause anxiety and tension or stress are:

  • Experienced by the person and the difficulties they encountered in childhood. 
  • Those exposed to traumatic events are more likely to develop anxiety disorders and stress disorders.
  • The illness causes anxiety and tension, especially for those with serious and chronic illnesses, these suffer from bouts of anxiety, tension, and fear of the future and what he reserves, and the treatments and the economic situation can place a heavy psychological burden on the patients.
  • Stress is part of the tense and worrying things in life, such as being uncomfortable at work, social problems, and low income, and it generates anxiety and stress disorders.
  • Personality also plays a role in anxiety and stress disorders, people's ability to withstand stress varies from person to person and some people are more susceptible to anxiety and stress disorders than others. 
  • Inheritable factors are influential in creating stress and anxiety diseases, and some studies point to the actuality of an inheritable source for anxiety and stress diseases, and it's genetically passed on to future generations.

Symptoms of anxiety and stress.

Symptoms of anxiety and stress vary from case to case, but in general, they include common physical and psychological symptoms, which are:

Physical symptoms:

Such as headache, nervousness, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, confusion, sweating, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, lump in the throat, insomnia, and some other symptoms that may appear in some patients. 

Psychosomatic illnesses:

These are organic illnesses that arise due to anxiety and intense emotions, and illnesses whose symptoms increase due to anxiety and tension, and treatment of anxiety is essential to self recover from such diseases, such as rheumatism and stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, and angina pectoris. 

Psychological symptoms:

Nervousness, unjustified anger, difficulty concentrating, fatigue and sleep problems, and confusion in social settings.

Diagnosis of anxiety and tension.

There are certain criteria by which a person is diagnosed with anxiety and tension disorders, which are:

  • A person feels an acute state of fear and intense anxiety without clear reasons, and anxiety is the tension and fear that accompanies it for months.
  • Feeling anxious is accompanied by several symptoms such as nervousness, extreme irritability, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension and tightness, and sleep disturbances. 
  • A person's life does not go in a normal way as a result of feelings of anxiety and stress which can make the person live in severe distress that turns his life upside down.
  • He feels anxious without being connected to an event or without a reason.

Anxiety and Stress Treatment.

The treatment is drug or psychotherapeutic, and it uses each treatment method separately or uses them together, depending on the individual's condition and personality, and here is an overview of the treatment methods:

Pharmacy Chemotherapy: 

Anxiety is relieved by taking anti-anxiety drugs and sedatives, but these drugs are addictive when taken long-term, antidepressants, which affect the work of neurotransmitters that are involved in the development of anxiety and stress disorders play an important role, and medication should only be administered after expert review and follow-up. 

Psychotherapy: 

Psychological sessions are prescribed by experts in the field of mental health through the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy and other psychotherapeutic methods which involves the therapist listening to the patient to clarify and understand the problem and the stress that caused it, then offering solutions to the patient and chooses the one that best suits him to overcome the anxiety and live his life well normally.
